Mansfield, OH (August 1, 2024) — The Ready for Hire program has wrapped up another successful year, marked by community service, safety education and an exciting final-day celebration. This summer, participants demonstrated their collaborative spirit and commitment to community enhancement through a volunteer project at Gorman Nature Center. The students worked diligently to dig out six inches of dirt around newly installed benches, ensuring visitors are able to swing their feet while seated comfortably. They also trimmed back overgrown trails, creating a clean and inviting environment for park-goers. While working, the group enjoyed sightings of various dragonflies, frogs and even a turtle, highlighting the rich biodiversity of the nature center.
In addition to their volunteer efforts, the Ready for Hire participants received crucial fire safety training from the Mansfield Fire Department. The fire safety session covered the R.A.C.E. (Remove, Alert, Confine, Extinguish) and P.A.S.S. (Pull, Aim, Squeeze, Sweep) techniques essential for managing fire emergencies. Students practiced extinguishing a simulated fire and had the exciting opportunity to explore fire trucks, gaining practical knowledge and an appreciation for the work of first responders.
The program concluded with a memorable visit to the Columbus Zoo, where participants celebrated their achievements and enjoyed a day of exploration and learning. They interacted with various animals, engaged in interactive exhibits and even had the chance to feed the giraffes. The outing provided a perfect end to their summer learning experience, leaving them with cherished memories and newfound knowledge.
